100 Year Flood

Sorry for the disappearance, loves. I’m here. Working my little hiney off.

I took Friday off work and headed south to my old ‘hood. Down to the river valley, where they have been devastated by flash floods. Luckily, my grandparents’ house survived with only a little water in the basement. Just a couple miles south of their house, campgrounds were washed away. Streets closed. Houses evacuated. There were two houses that slid right down the bluff.

Driving down the Great River Road, we missed most of the devastation. We saw several roads closed, areas where the water hadn’t receded yet and piles of junk appliances building up on the side of the highway. We saw the emergency relief stations set up in Winona and bluff sides that had been washed away.

That was nothing compared to what happened to other areas. Check out this link my grandpa sent me. The pictures were hard for me to look at. I used to live in Rushford. It’s not a very big town – the whole thing was under water. I also used to live in some of the other areas around there that got hit so hard. It’s heartbreaking to think of all our old neighbors who lost everything. Some even lost their lives.

I can’t help but feel like we’re being punished for something. Flash flooding all around the country – wherever there isn’t severe drought and fires, that is. It just seems like we’re paying for something to me. I don’t know – maybe I’m a little crazy. Okay, maybe I’m a lot crazy.

Anyway, we did have a pleasant time down there and I’ll share *happy* pictures tomorrow.

I so sorry that your old community's have been hit so hard by flood's. It is beyond sad and tragic.

If I may say one thing, and you can tell me to sit and spin if you wish...however, I believe in a loving and caring God. And I don't think that a loving and caring God would punish his children with flash flooding. I think the flash flooding, fires, and drought are all a result of humankind not taking good care of the earth. There is also a scripture in the Bible that talks about humankind not being able to direct their own steps. I think the state that our Earth is in is a prime example of that.

*okay, I am climbing off my soap box now!*

Oh, I BET those were hard to look at! What devastation! I'm glad that your grandparents home was relatively unscathed. So many people suffering right now...

The place with the old cars, that's right on 61, no? When we drove by there I recognized the teal car from a picture in the newspaper.

Just so sad :(

Hi,
I am so thankful that you're grandparents are fine. So hard to see the devastation.
I would echo Jodi's comments. God does not punish us in this way. He does, however give us what we want-life with Him or without Him.
So glad you blogged!

Amazing. Thankfully, you're grandparents didn't get that much damage.

Hey, thanks everyone. It is very sad. I'm very grateful none of the family was affected.

For the record, I didn't mean that we were being smited or anything - just seems like we're being warned or something - like "Take care of YOUR land". I dunno - I'm sure it's just global warming that causing all the weather problems.

It is a very odd feeling to see places we know devastated. A friend of mine's town was completely leveled by a tornado a few years ago, and now it doesn't exist any more. Every time I drive by the exit sign for that town, I get an eerie feeling. It's amazing how Mother Nature can put us in our place isn't it? I can't imagine what these flood victims are feeling...
